Newborn Essentials on a Budget

Could be days, could be weeks… bags kind of packed, car seat base is still not installed, but we’re ready for you little babe!

Baby fever is a solid 10/10 here in our household. We have sorted through most of Parker’s baby clothes [talk about sentimental], brought up all our favorite newborn essentials and now, the waiting game begins. I have always wanted my water to break in some epic way, like at Target or Chick-fil-A, something exiting.  But our c-section induction date is scheduled, so little babe will most likely be here then, on 2/22.

Since I am in full blown baby fever mode, I thought I would share some of my favorite baby essentials on a budget. If you have been following along, I am a stay-at-home-mommy+babysitter[but my last day was 2/8] and to stay afloat, we stay on a pretty strict budget, well besides my current Chick-fil-A obsession, it’s a strict budget.

Smilo Baby

I actually found out about Smilo through an IG ad when Parker was just an infant. I was skeptical at first, but I am so glad I went ahead and ordered a pack of their bottles because it was truly LIFE CHANGING. Parker suffered from really bad silent reflux and I thought we would never ever overcome that phase, and these bottles truly helped. While I primarily fed him via breast, there were many times he just would not latch and these bottles were the only anti-colic, mom-like-ducts he would latch onto. They are super easy to clean too. I highly recommend these! The company is super helpful too, I melted one of my bottles accidentally in a micro steam bag from Medela, and I contacted them, and even though it was 100% my fault, they sent me a replacement, no charge!

  • Nipple stages from in 0 1 2 3
  • 4 colors to choose from
  • 2 different size options for bottles
  • 3 pack for only $24.99
Ryan and Rose

Again, thanks to the amazing IG community, I was introduced to Ryan and Rose. This company is probably one of my all time favorites and they are truly a blessing to the world. I got P his first Cutie PAT as soon as she launched the color tan. If you do not know what a Cutie PAT is, it is a pacifier and teether in one! Yes, your reading that right, it’s both!! How functional is that?! In my personal opinion, it is way softer then the Avent Soothie. The whole nipple itself can be pushed in, so it will just function as a teether. Just recently they launched 2 stages too and every month there is a limited edition color!

  • 2 stages to choose from
  • 5 standard colors + LE colors galore
  • $12 each
Northwell Baby Products

As a parent on a budget, I was swept away by Northwell Goods. I am sure we all know about the DockATot, a baby lounger at a whopping $175 and their toddler size lounger selling for $275. Well, that just was not going to work for us financially. So I did some mommy research and came across Northwell Goods on Etsy. All I have to say is move aside hefty priced loungers, introducing the Northwell mini and mighty cuddle nests! Their mini cuddle nest is only $99 and mighty is only $175. I know that still sounds expensive, but I got mine on their Etsy Shop back on Black Friday of 2017 for only $65, so I totally suggest checking their Etsy Shop for sales and etc.

So we did not co-sleep with P using this, we put the cuddle nest in his crib along with the crib wedge to kept him more propped up right when he was suffering silent reflux. It did help with that, but it did not help with him sleeping through the night like every suggests a baby lounger will do, but I loved it regardless! Hopefully with baby number 2, we will get better luck with sleeping through the night sooner using the cuddle nest.

  • 4 colors to choose from
  • 2 sizes of cuddle nests
  • Mini $99 / Mighty $175 [check Etsy Shop for sales]
Woombie Pod

The most magical swaddle ever. Thank you Tara from Rad and Happy for boasting about these with your daughter Paige. This swaddle right here, is the best invention ever to help babies fall asleep and stay asleep! I got my first one on their clearance bin, because lets be honest here, I love a good discount and I am skeptical when it comes to baby products and will they work for me. THIS WORKS! THIS IS THE BEST! Their website is super overwhelming because they have a lot of stuff, but the Original Woombie or Convertible Woombie is what your looking for and all you need. The peanut shape design, snuggles your babe and the zipper is 2 way, so it is super easy for late night diaper changes without distributing them too much. I love the Swaddle Me’s but the velcro was so loud for late night diaper changes, I dreaded changing the diaper because it would wake Parker up.

Baby Bumco Diaper Cream Brush

Stop what your doing and do yourself a favor and order a Diaper Cream Brush right now! This made diaper changes, that resulted in diaper rash, SO MUCH EASIER. I got this a little late in the game, but nonetheless I go one and it was and still is amazing. My husband and I would get diaper paste all over our hands and that stuff just does not wash off. This little butt spatula solves all those problems and more. It is super gentle and easy to use, it curves with your babies tush to apply the perfect amount of cream. Thats it. And just a baby wipe will wipe off all the access paste and voilà, good as new and ready for the next application. GET ONE MAMAS!

  • 6 colors to choose from
  • 2 different sizes
  • Full size is $9.99 / Full size + Mini is $12.99
  • Can be purchased anywhere, Target, Wal-Mart, Amazon and their direct site.
Lansinoh Thera Pearl Breast Therapy

These I did not use with Parker, but wish I did so I am adding them here. This is more for mom then baby, but breastfeeding is totally a dual job. I had a rough start breastfeeding. Bloody and so so so sore nipples, weird rashes and tears galore, but what helped me prepare for each nursing session was a warm wash cloth over my breast. It felt really good and I could go into the feeding with way less tears. These gel packs can be used cold or hot and they are reusable! They are microwave safe and BPA free. I have seen these are Target and they are super affordable too. If you do not plan on breastfeeding but plan on pumping, these will also help with milk-flow and soreness!

  • Reusable
  • Can be purchased anywhere, Target, Wal-Mart, Amazon and their direct site.
  • 2 pack for only $13.99
Nursing Pillow

This is a breastfeeding moms best friend. No, scratch that. Any new moms best friend. This pillow is a huge helper too, especially if you have a c-section, the pillow helps take away some of the weight from the baby if you breastfeeding cradle position, or seriously just even holding your little bundle of joy in a cradle position. Best part is, this pillow is smaller the the well know Boppy so it travels well. The nursing pillow goes way beyond nursing too. It helps with tummy time and can act as a support for when your baby starts to sit up. See previous blog post for more information on this amazing pillow.

On-The-Go Sound Machine

Babies love white noise, and mamas love Target, so get a travel noise machine for all Target runs, coffee dates and simple car rides to the grandparents! This is a diaper bag staple for me. It is super affordable at under ten bucks and the convenience factor is a mom win. It can be clipped onto a stroller, carseat, diaper bag, everything and anything. It is super sleek and only takes two AAA batteries. I have changed out the batteries only a handful of times since I got it and Parker is almost 19 months!

  • Includes 4 relaxing sounds
  • Hooks onto anything
  • $9.99
4moms mamaRoo

So this one is the most expensive item on my list, but I think it is worth every single penny. If you have the budget for it, GET IT! You can purchase it directly on their website and get 2.5% back on Ebates. I, of course, am a bargain hunter and I knew my husband would never say yes to spending over $200 on a baby product that could potentially be outgrown fast. So I shopped around. Originally I found one in the “as-is”/clearance section at my local Buy Buy Baby for around $100. I don’t really remember the exact price, but I do remember it was a great deal. When I finally convinced him to check it out, we went to the store only to find out it had been sold. I was so so so upset! At this point, I was a sleepless zombie mom that needed to try everything and anything to get P to sleep longer then 1-2hrs. Luckily for us, that night, I looked on eBay and to my luck, found a opened box mamaRoo for $81 shipped. Needless to say, we got it, came within a week and Parker slept great! Obviously this is not where he sleep all night, but for naps or when he was super fussy, this soothed him great!

  • 3 seat options to choose from [mesh, plush and classic]
  • Plugs directly into wall, no batteries!
  • Prices range from $219 – $249
